Puzzle #27: Solid, Hollow, Dotted
Easy · Distribution · target time about 13 seconds
Which option completes the pattern?
How to solve it (answer: E)
The rule
Each row and each column has one solid, hollow, and dotted shape.
Step by step
- Look at the top row: a medium dotted triangle, then a medium solid triangle, then a medium hollow triangle.
- The middle row uses the same values in a different order.
- The bottom row has a medium hollow triangle and a medium dotted triangle, so it is missing a medium solid triangle.
Tip: List what each row already has, then pick the one value the row is missing.
Why the wrong options look right
The wrong options keep most of the pattern and change the fill or the size, so each one looks finished at a glance. Check both before you choose.
- Option A: This row already has a hollow shape.
- Option B: This row already has a dotted shape.
- Option C: Every triangle in the grid is the same size, but this one is bigger.
- Option D: This row already has a hollow shape. Every triangle in the grid is the same size, but this one is bigger.
- Option F: This row already has a dotted shape. Every triangle in the grid is the same size, but this one is bigger.
