Puzzle #10: Fewer Turning Ls
Medium · Rotation · target time about 21 seconds
Which option completes the pattern?
How to solve it (answer: C)
The rule
In each row, the L turns 45° clockwise and the count goes down by one at each step.
Step by step
- Look at the top row: six solid Ls pointing down, then five solid Ls pointing down and left, then four solid Ls pointing left.
- The middle row follows the same step.
- The bottom row goes seven solid Ls pointing up, then six solid Ls pointing up and right, so next comes five solid Ls pointing right.
- Check both rules: only one option fits them both.
Tip: Follow one tip of the shape and note how far it turns or moves between panels.
Why the wrong options look right
The wrong options keep most of the pattern and change the angle or the number of shapes, so each one looks finished at a glance. Check both before you choose.
- Option A: It turns the wrong way. Each step turns 45° clockwise.
- Option B: It turns 90° clockwise instead of 45° clockwise.
- Option D: It forgets that the count changes too: the count goes down by one.
- Option E: It turns the wrong way. Each step turns 45° clockwise. It forgets that the count changes too: the count goes down by one.
- Option F: It turns 90° clockwise instead of 45° clockwise. It forgets that the count changes too: the count goes down by one.
